Pella Christian Girls Soccer Team Proves it Can Play With Anyone

Murray’s first-half goal was all the scoring until Fort Payne rolled in the second half.

The Lady Hubs varsity soccer team dropped a pair of games to close out the week, with the Rochelle girls falling at Princeton on Thursday by a score of 5-0 before losing against Geneseo at home on Friday by a score of 10-0.

Moon scored in the fifth minute before both teams went into a two-hour lighting delay with 11 minutes left in the first half.

The other was it was the third consecutive victory to open the season for a young Vikings team, which has been a lively bunch early on, coach Marco Bernardini says.

Coronado scored in the 21st minute and East took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

That wasn’t reflected by last season’s results – Jackson finished below.500 on the year and lost 5-0 to in its Division 1 district opener – but is more evident when looking at the overall culture of the program.

“Our kids came out and played really well today”. We knew our backs were against the wall (in the region playoff race) and they knew they could do it.

“We did well, played on turf”. It was a fun game to be a part of and a fun game to watch. In years past, Bernardini says his team has mapped out a handful of goals in the regular and postseason and tried to achieve them. “Overall, I am very pleased with the game we executed”.

York was out shooting the Vikings 8-2 in the first half, but with the wind at their back the Vikings evened up the shots in the second half, but could not score. Gabi Tomlin struck with an assist from Katie Butler in the 24th minute to cap the first half scoring for the hosts.

Mattox said that playing more defensive minded in the second half crossed his mind, but the York girls continued to attack and play the same way as they did in the first half.

A decision on this weekends games will be made sometime today.

After the game, Lady Spartans’ head coach Steve Stewart was pleased with the depth that the program has accumulated, and he thought last Thursday’s game was a chance for the team’s depth to be displayed a little bit as he rotated in 18 players throughout the match. “We are just happy to win today and have a good practice tomorrow”.
