In table tennis, India’s women’s doubles pair of Manika Batra and Mouma Das went down 0-3 (5-11, 4-11, 5-11) to Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu of Singapore in the gold medal clash.
With this gold medal, now she has become the first Indian woman to win table tennis gold in women’s singles at multi- sports carnival Commonwealth Games.
Manika seemed to be India’s biggest revelation in Gold Coast as she cruised her way into the third table tennis finale on Saturday morning.
The 22-year-old Delhi girl thumped her opponent 11-7, 11-6, 11-2, 11-7. This is India’s first ever gold in the women’s singles event at the CWG.
Batra, Das win women’s doubles TT silver This is Batra’s third medal of the tournament having earlier won a gold medal in women’s team event as well.
Harmeet Desai and Sanil Shetty lost their semifinal and will play for bronze on Saturday.
A Silver nonetheless was a remarkable result for the Indian team which could not make the final in the past four Games.
In squash actions, the mixed doubles pair of Dipika and Saurav stormed into the final after defeating New Zealand’s Joelle King and Paul Coll 2-1 (9-11, 11-8, 11-10).
Manika, coming in confidentally from her semi-final win against world No.4 Tianwei Feng from Singapore, did not let Yu settle into the match at all.
Meanwhile, Sharath Kamal and G Sathiyan have entered the men’s doubles final and are sure of medals. In an extensive 71 minute encounter, Nehwal won 21-14, 18-21, 21-17.
In athletics, Chopra and Kashana entered the final of the men’s Javelin Throw.
