Record champions Real Madrid are set to take on German football giants Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals while English team Liverpool will meet AS Roma, as revealed in a draw here on Friday.
“Liverpool have made a statement like we did”, said Roma captain Daniele De Rossi, who scored in the surprising 3-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday to overturn a 4-1 first-leg loss.
Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was at pains to play down any suggestion that the Serie A outfit was the easier draw for his side, who demolished Premier League leaders Manchester City to reach the semi-finals for the first time in 10 years.
“I still talk to most of the players there”, Salah told CNN.
Champions League odds: Who will lift the trophy?
“But if anybody thinks this is the easiest draw then I can not help this person – they obviously didn’t see both games against Barcelona”.
Zinedine Zidane and his men will face a daunting task in the form of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, who have looked like a formidable side throughout the tournament. Are we going to get a chance to see a three-peat, or will Bayern finally finish the job against Madrid? Real are appearing in the semis for an eighth straight season and Bayern have been in the final four in four of the past five.
Real Madrid, with the help of a late penalty kick, were able to withstand a Juventus comeback attempt, and Bayern did what they had to to beat Sevilla.
“Because our opponents in the fight for the top four are too strong, you can not think they will not win every game”. Of course, whatever happens, as long as you are in the race there is always a chance wherever it is, so I am fine with it.
Roma also advanced on the away-goals rule in the last 16 against Shakhtar Donetsk, first losing the away leg then shutting out their opponent in a home win. Although many fans would have wanted the second leg to be played at Anfield, after overcoming Manchester City they will hope to have a similar strong start to give them a foundation to get the final.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, need to keep up their stellar attacking play.
Bayern will host Madrid in the first leg, with the reverse fixture to be played May 1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. We were very close to each other and we are good friends. “In this hard league, to be pretty much safe for next year this early is really a special thing – they have all of my respect”.
