Mueller probes Ukrainian oligarch’s $150K donation to Trump

Asked why he hasn’t moved to fire Mueller, Trump again said the situation is a “disgrace”. “He wants to take down the President”.

Stephen Ryan, a lawyer for Cohen, said in a statement that the US Attorney’s office for the Southern District of NY had executed “a series of search warrants” including at his office, and “seized the privileged communications” between Cohen and his clients.

“I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the NY action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller”. It resulted in the unnecessary seizure of protected attorney-client communications between a lawyer and his clients.

In February, Fox News reported that most of the 17 confirmed attorneys on Mueller’s team were registered Democrats or made Democratic political donations.

The objective of the raid remains unclear, but a source close to Cohen said the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized documents related to the Stormy Daniels matter, as well personal, financial and banking records dating back to 2013.

The special counsel is also probing a $150,000 payment Ukrainian billionaire steel magnate Victor Pinchuk made during the United States presidential campaign to Trump’s foundation for the American real estate developer to give a 20-minute speech via video link, according to The New York Times. Rosenstein then would determine whether to allow Mueller to proceed or to assign the matter to another US attorney or another part of the Justice Department.

Last week, Trump broke his silence on the Daniels matter, saying he was not aware of the payment made by Cohen to Daniels days before the 2016 election.

The Times first reported in March that Mueller had subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents as part of his investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 USA election.

Dershowitz said it is apparent that Mueller is staying within the confines of the Russian collusion case parameters and instead farming out extraneous developments like Stormy Daniels and alleged campaign finance violations to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of NY.

There is a pending complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission by the group Common Cause, alleging that the payment to Daniels by the Trump campaign violates the Federal Election Campaign Act.

There have been few signs that Mueller was interested in investigating the payment, though.

A source close to the White House warned that Mueller’s decision could push Trump in the direction of taking action against the special counsel’s office. The White House has denied Daniels’ allegations of an affair with Trump.

Trump answered questions about Daniels for the first time last week, saying he had no knowledge of the payment made by Cohen and he didn’t know where Cohen had gotten the money. “Well, I think it’s a disgrace what’s going on”. We’ll see what happens, but I think it’s really a sad situation when you look at what happened. “Many people have said you should fire him”.

“That’s no witch hunt”.
