Poor finish for All Blacks Sevens in Vancouver

Australia were convincingly beaten 31-14 by England in the playoff for fifth at the rugby sevens world series round in Vancouver. They progress to the Cup quarter-finals and face Argentina and U.S. respectively.

In other quarter-finals, the United States shut out New Zealand 17-0 in a match that saw no score until the second half and South Africa staged a second-half fightback to beat Australia 24-19. “All the teams now are very hard to play against, not like before”.

Carlin Isles scored a try as US defeated New Zealand 17-0 in their quarterfinal of the Vancouver Sevens. Canada’s Nathan Hirayama did however secure his own milestone as he passed sevens’ great Waisale Serevi on the all-time points table with a total of 1328.

After the final, Tuwai said he was proud of his young side.

The All Blacks Sevens have finished seventh at the Vancouver leg of the world series.

England led 14-7 at halftime and went on with it after the break in a five tries to two victory.

Sevuloni Mocenacagi scored two tries, the second of which launched Fiji’s second-half surge. However Australia came out firing in the last match of the day sealing a 31-21 victory over the U.S. to finish as Pool A leaders and through to the Cup quarter-finals with the USA. Their form didn’t continue against Samoa however as they held England to a 7-0 first half and followed with a further two tries in the second half to seal a 21-5 final scoreline.

Fiji signalled their intentions for the day with a 43-7 quarter-final thrashing of Argentina. Samoa join Wales in the Challenge Trophy. Paula Dranisinukula then showed his strength by defying three tacklers to score Fiji’s last try.

Billy Odhiambo made amends in the 13th minute with a attractive try that gave Kenya the 12-0 win. Fiji answered with two more tries, this time from Amenoni Nasilasila and Mesulame Kunavula.

It was the first time Kenya was reaching the semifinals this season even though they had reached the Cup quarterfinals four times.

New Zealand have been sent tumbling out of the Vancouver Sevens at the quarterfinal stage by a dialled in U.S. side.

South Africa lead by 109.

New Zealand had earlier beaten Scotland and Russian Federation in contrasting matches, battling to defeat the Scots 31-26 before dissecting Russian Federation 31-5 and going on to account for South Africa 33-14.

The win puts Fiji at second place to South Africa in the World Series Standing.
