Meghan Markle’s touching tribute to Diana on Commonwealth Day.

Today was a significant milestone for bride-to-be Meghan Markle as she attended her first official public engagement with the Queen.

And the bride-to-be used the occasion to pay subtle tribute to her fiancé’s late mother Diana by wearing a white coat by Amanda Wakeley, who was one of the princess’ favourite designers.

The former Suits star looked elegant in the £895 sculpted tailoring Crombie coat, which she teamed with a navy dress.

She accessorised with an elegant white beret by Stephen Jones, the milliner who was also a firm favourite with Diana.

In the early days of her marriage to Prince Charles, the milliner teamed up with Jasper Conran and Arabella Pollen to make a series of berets for Diana, then 20.

Meghan Markle, 36, today payed a touching tribute to Princess Diana by attending the Commonwealth Day Service wearing two of her favourite designers

Princess Diana was a big fan of Amanda Wakelely and stepped out in one of her shoes to make the major announcement she was stepping back from public life in 1993

He added a personal touch by embroidering her initials inside, along with the Prince of Wales’ feathers.

Today’s chanelling of the woman who would have become her mother-in-law was a significant step by Meghan.

Diana also chose Amanda Wakeley for a similarly important occasion in 1993 when she wore one of her bottle green suits to a charity lunch where she announced that she was resigning her links with all but a few of the more than 100 charities she had hitherto supported.

In fact, she was soon back, but now working with a whittled-down list of seven charities she could be personally involved with.

The Queen was welcomed to the service by the Dean of Westminster, as she arrived for the Commonwealth Day service

Amanda Wakeley was an important designer for the princess in more than just a style sense as the pair quickly became on friendly terms.

The designer recalled being introduced to the royal when she’d only been in business for around a year.

‘I was very lucky. Anna Harvey, the then deputy editor of Vogue, thought my style would work well for the Princess of Wales. So she came to the studio,’ Amanda recalled.

‘I was so naive. I thought, “They’ll send sniffer dogs in first, so I’ll know I have five minutes to get ready”.

Meghan and Harry were all smiles as they marked an important milestone in their relationship

The buzzer went ten minutes before the appointment and I thought, “I’ll brush my hair afterwards” – and it was Diana, standing on the doorstep, on one foot, peering through her fringe, and saying ‘I’m really sorry, I’m early!’

After this somewhat inauspicious start, the two young women got along famously.

‘We had a lovely time – a laugh. She was an incredibly warm woman and very relaxed. There were no airs and graces and she was fantastic to dress.

‘One of my regrets is that the first cheque that came in with Prince Charles’s signature on went straight to the bank. I didn’t even photocopy it. That would have been funny to have hanging in the loo…’
