The popular host of the show “Cosmos” took on the resurgence of the old belief in a flat Earth in a new video.
Do not even bother trying to bring that flat Earth noise to popular physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, as he is not having any of it. The host of “Cosmos” released a new YouTube video on his channel that gives a reality check to the growing popularity of a fringe belief that the Earth is in fact a flat disk, and not a sphere as all scientists believe. The video is embedded at the bottom of this article.
He posted the video to his YouTube Channel, “StarTalk,” and when asked what he thought about the idea that the Earth is flat, his response was simple: “We have video from space of the rotating, spherical Earth. The Earth is round.” He also pointed out that throughout the universe, all objects of a certain size tend to favor the spherical shape, even if sometimes they are distorted because they are rotating at an extreme speed, for example.
Tyson also noted that the shape of the Earth’s shadow is always perfectly round during eclipses, whereas if it were a flat disk you would sometimes see a flat shadow.
Tyson believes that the fact that the United States protects free speech coupled with the schools doing a poor job of teaching people to think critically is what has led to a rise in the belief despite it being debunked hundreds of years ago.
