Warning! The following contains spoilers for the Season 2 penultimate episode of This Is Us. Read at your own risk!
This Is Us put the spotlight on Deja in the Season 2 penultimate episode, and while fans witnessed many shocking moments, nothing was more shocking than what went down in the present. Randall and Beth took Deja and her mother Shauna into their home after finding the two sleeping in a car, and after a fun evening of food and games, Shauna announced she was leaving the house and that she couldn’t take Deja. The shocking reveal may have just set up a major storyline for Randall in Season 3 as Deja will likely live with the family again.
Deja is back in Randall and Beth’s life, and it’s like that name of hers is a curse. Granted, Deja enjoys living with the Pearsons, but she also loves her mother. No doubt the girl will be devastated if she finds out the next morning her mother skipped town without so much as a goodbye, and it’s likely not something she’ll soon forget. If Deja will be mad at her mother for leaving without a goodbye, she’ll be furious to know Randall and Beth knew Shauna was doing it and let her walk. Given the situation, expect some outbursts from Deja should she get the full story about what all went down while she was sleeping.
Shauna is leaving, but whether or not she’ll be back to get Deja on This Is Us remains to be seen. With child services not involved in this removal, there’s really nothing stopping Shauna from showing up on the family’s doorstep at any point in Season 3 and trying to get Deja to leave with her to go wherever sometime later. Ideally, this situation would happen when Shauna is back on her feet, but should she arrive belligerent and wanting to pull Deja back out into the streets, there’s bound to be some drama between Deja’s mom and the Pearson clan.
The fact that This Is Us didn’t shut the door on Shauna by having her relinquish her parental rights of Deja almost guarantees this tale will continue into Season 3. It also seems likely given the Season 2 finale will primarily take place at Kate and Toby’s wedding, which doesn’t seem like the ideal setting for another Randall-centric episode. That said, with one of Beth’s extended family members making an appearance at Kate’s wedding, one has to wonder if their presence isn’t in some way tied to this new Deja situation. Who can even think of a wedding after a bombshell reveal like this?!
This Is Us will air its Season 2 finale on NBC Tuesday, March 13 at 9:00 p.m. ET. After that, the wait for Season 3 will be on, although with the current slate of upcoming television it doesn’t appear as though the wait will be that long.
