Spoilers below for anyone who hasn’t yet watched The Walking Dead’s latest episode.
Without a relevant counterpart in the comic books, The Walking Dead‘s Jadis is technically just as unpredictable as Daryl, Enid, and others. And “The Lost and the Plunderers” put her in quite the uncomfortable predicament, with the Saviors killing off all of her artsy junkyard brethren. We’ve yet to see what’s up with the helipad and the solar panels, but with Jadis now on her own, fans have doubled down on theories that she will eventually get morphed into the similarly word-mincing comic villain Alpha. Will it happen, though? Here’s what actress Pollyanna McIntosh had to say:
Well, I mean, she’s been brought up by the fans on those funny sites since I got cast, before we even shot a second of it or anyone had seen a script. People really love that character and they are excited to see her and I’d be honored for it to be me, but I’d also be thrilled if we could have another great female character come in, and why not have two? So, for me, it’s like which is better? Which is more exciting: to add another great woman to the cast of characters, or to get to do it myself? I don’t honestly know. They’ll decide.
First, we’re definitely not going to refute her point that having two powerful female antagonists would be better than just having one, Especially since Season 9 will have female showrunner Angela Kang running things. But it’s almost always better when a big dangerous villain comes from a familiar place, as opposed to always having a stranger step in.
Second, Pollyanna McIntosh is fully correct in saying fans were clamoring for Jadis to become Alpha in the very seconds after she was cast. Despite the fact that Alpha and the Whisperers didn’t show up on the page until after the years-long time jump that followed the All Out War. Those facts wouldn’t need to be adapted so faithfully, as far as the length of the time jump, but if Jadis were to become the mysterious new villain, it couldn’t happen anytime soon. The Whisperers were a pretty large group when the were first introduced, and their way of life was fully established. It wouldn’t be so easy for Jadis to amass another following in short order. And I’m not interested in seeing progo-Alpha at all, either.
Showrunner Scott Gimple apparently gave Pollyanna McIntosh a much more concrete answer about her chances of becoming Alpha. Check the actress’ answer to EW out below and judge for yourself whether you think he’d being honest or not.
But, no, he’s said publicly and to me, ‘It’s a completely different thing. It’s not you.’ And I say, ‘Fine, okay.’
First things first, though. Jadis needs to get some kind of revenge on Simon for ordering the deaths of her community members, and then she needs to confront Rick about leaving her with all the junkyard walkers.
