Russian Federation targeting 2018 elections, United States intelligence chiefs say

Coats told members of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee that they “need to assume that there might be interference” after Russian Federation “upped their game” by manipulating social media ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. CIA Director Mike Pompeo said there is a “significant effort” by intelligence agencies “to do our best to push back against this threat”.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coates testified publicly before the Senate Intelligence Committee Tuesday and cautioned that the United States is under attack.

President Donald Trump is facing sharp criticism for failing to act decisively to head off potential attempts by Russian Federation to interfere in the upcoming US midterm elections.

The warnings were striking in their contrast to President Donald Trump’s views on Russian Federation.

Much of the Committee session focused on the topic of Russian meddling in USA elections and cyber threats posed by Russian agencies and related organizations, however many Senators at the meeting also expressed concern over China’s activities across the globe.

The North Koreans recently sent athletes and a delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea, which included the North’s ceremonial head of state and the regime leader’s only sister Kim Yo Jong.

Cybersecurity is far from the only threat on Coats’ radar, however. He said the US has adopted a policy of “maximum pressure” and seeks a peaceful settlement with North Korea.

But CIA director Mike Pompeo said the USA intelligence community has assessed how the North would react to a US military attack. But Wray declined to say whether that remains the bureau’s assessment.

“Terrorist outfits supported by Pakistan will continue to take advantage of their safe haven in the country to plan and conduct attacks in India and Afghanistan, including against USA interests”, Coats said during the hearing on “Worldwide Threat Assessment” of the United States intelligence community. “I stood by it then, and I stand by it now”, Rogers said. They said there were concerns the Chinese companies would use their access to spy on US officials, and USA intelligence chiefs appeared to agree on Tuesday.

DHS says it is providing state and local election officials with real-time intelligence on the threats.

A new US intelligence report predicts Russian Federation will meddle in this year’s midterm elections as it pursues bolder cyber operations and false information campaigns against America and its allies. He warned that risk of “conflict between states is highest since end of cold War”, especially on part of North Korea and regional struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Robert Cardillo, director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, said government and industry needed to “lock arms” and cooperate, but that he was optimistic that would happen.
